The mouse cursor (not blue tooth) keeps returning to the upper left corner of the screen and switches from the application window to the finder. If I catch it fast enough I can hit the escape key and return to the application. Otherwise, it will go to the finder menus and stay there. This happens quite often and in most applications. Is there a solution? I have given up on bluetooth so the mouse and keyboard are both hard connections.
Thanks for any advice.

(pic3) Braucht man eh nie, also was solls.

Ok, everything short in english now. ;)

I,ve tried to get rid of the anoying soundproblem. The fact that you won´t understand a word if you use iChat and the fan starts to run is really a pain in the ass.
For this reason, I,ve opened the modbook. Yes, this will void warranty, so think about what you will do. :D
Ok, once I´ve opened the case, I searched for the microphone. As you can see in pic4, the mic sits on the isight. Well, thats logical. But as you can although see, the mic-cable is really long. So it seems to be easy to relocate the mic.
After little search, I,ve figured out that the kensington-lock-hole might be idle to hold the mic.
Now cames the tricky part. First of all, you have to remove the isight panel and remove the mic. Take a piece of black tape to close the open drillhole for the mic.
Than remove the cable.
Relocate the cable as shown in pic5.
Take a little peace of foam or as I do, a foambumper for furnitures. cut a little hole in it so the mic will fit inside. (pic1)
Than take the standard Apple Nylon tool or something else that will work as lever to bend the bottom case around the kensington hole carefully.
Use your lever and bend the case as far as you need to put the mic with foam inside the hole.
Now fix the cable if necessary. You can now close book - thats it.
You should activate the function reduce noise in the Mic-Panel-Prefs. And you should raise the input-mic-level one step.

Thats it. No problems so far on my book and now problems with iSight/iChat any more. Yeah!

3D content creation on the ModBook

Everyone keeps saying the ModBook can't be used for rendering 3D. That is not entirely correct. I have ordered a Modbook, and will be using it for 3D content creation. What you need to play games, and what you need to make games are two very different things. The current trend in game art, and even film art, is heavy use of displacement and normal maps on lower poly cages. A simple Modbook game art workflow might be like so: 1. Build a low-med poly cage in Silo 3D, an amazingly great, and very clean 3D modeling app that is well suited for a tablet PC, then 2. Import that model into Zbrush, which will run very well on the Modbook, and detail your mesh up using the awesome 512 level stylus of your ModBook. Now 4. Export your displacement maps from Zbrush. And finally 5. bring your cage and displacement maps into Modo, or Maya for a high quality render. In this scenario, all of the heavy work is done by the CPU, not the GPU. Lets also not forget the inclusion of a diffuse map, which would normally be painted in a 2D graphics app like Photoshop or Painter... again perfectly suited for the modbook.

Another thing to realize is that game content is built one model at a time. Although the GMA X3100 may not be able to run your favorite game, it's more than sufficient for working on a single game model at a time. You won't be populating entire PS3 or 360 levels on a modbook, which would be silly on a 13-inch screen anyway, but you can still take your models with you, and work on them at the coffee shop. Your ModBook and a portable keyboard should be all you need.

So I just wanted to dispel the misconception that this can't be used as a 3D machine. This thing was built for Zbrush, with it's fast processor, and 4 gigs or ram. I am actually shocked that there has not been a partnership between Axiotron and Zbrush since the long awaited Zbrush 3.5 Mac edition is just weeks away. I'm sure they would have no problem recommending the Modbook as the premier portable Zbrush solution.

The ModBook absolutely needs to ship with a Zbrush 3.5 demo. It is the killer Modbook app. It was designed to be fully operational with just a stylus.

Would an 8-series nvidia or even quadro be better? Of course. But I want the 13-inch form factor. I'm not sure I would want to tote around a 15-inch tablet.

Anyway, I hope that both my Modbook has arrived, and Zbrush 3.5 Mac has shipped by October, so I can post my experience with the Modbook from the perspective of a professional game artist. So far there has been no such review. In fact, most of the formal reviewers that received a kit from Axiotron weren't even remotely artistic and had no idea what to do with the device.

Note to Axiotron: Send review units to respected artists, not average Joes that can't use a stylus. You need reviews on conceptart.org, not wired and arstechnica or even macworld.com ... figure out who your customers are.... if you think you are going to sell this to geeks and apple fanboys, just judging from who you send review units to, I think you are off the mark. The only artist reviews of your product have been from customers. No, the Ars guy drawing a kitten does not count.

PS, (and OT)

Axiotron: hire a couple programmers and just fix the bluetooth and screen rotation yourself. How hard is it to write a couple custom kernel extensions? You are acting sort of helpless, sitting around waiting for apple to fix something that they obviously could care less about. The hobbyists over at insaneleymac would have had these minor annoyances fixed a long time ago. Hell, those kids have hacked Leopard to run on just about anything, and you can't even fix your bluetooth and screen rotation? I can't cut you any slack on this because there is just no excuse.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but,

My question is simple but complex. Is it really worth it? I have been watching the Modbook for quite some time now. Watching it grow and produce for the most part. And I am probably exaggerating, but as I digress.

I have been saving up for the Modbook for quite some time now, doing research, reading reviews and forums, looking at bags, the whole deal, and I start to question myself, "Do I really need this?" In reality, no. I have a perfectly fine working desktop computer [ A Mac running on Leopard ], an Intuos3 Tablet and I have received the new Apple keyboard a few months or so ago.

I do draw, but not professionally. It's out of leisure and my art really isn't fantastic, but I draw for other people as I have an art shop on a website. It may sound dorky, but it's on an avatar based forum [ No not Gaia ]. So yes I do draw for people there, and I do post quite often, which could be a problem since I would have to 'tap' on the keyboard with the tablet pen. I do have a plug in usb keyboard, but that pretty much defeats the purpose of the Modbook not being a laptop. Then there is also the game situation. I play Tetris and occasionally other games online. It requires the keyboard. It would be rather awkward playing Tetris with the built in Modbook keyboard.

So if I got the Modbook, I would use it as the portable computer it is. I would use it in various places around the house versus my desk. But I would have to be close to a wall socket due to my obsessive use and limited battery. I could bring it to the world out side of my house when riding in vehicles and traveling while shopping and what not. So I could embed it into my everyday life like some of my friends have with a labtop. Go on the computer or go on the laptop. My family has never owned a laptop because we have not needed to. I am an only child, so I had my own computer that I shared with my mother and my father had one for all of his working needs.

So I could make it work. I have another keyboard [ and mouse, but I don't think I would need that ]. And I would probably use my desktop computer as storage for all my larger / main files. But I do have some questions. How hot does it get? I’ve read it was managable, but some people say its hot. So I am unsure. Does it feel heavy? I have a six pound cat and she feels pretty light, but I have read complaints about the weight. Do you think I should get it or not? I have already looked at bags, cases, etc. I have dwindled down the number that I have started with, but I don’t want to buy anything until I am sure that I am buying the Modbook or not. So do you think it’s really worth it for me? Should I wait for a clamp on keyboard? Do you think I really need it? Anything else?

My parents have advised that I wait for 'another version' so to speak. To work out the kinks and perfect it. But I remember reading some time back that they weren't thinking about making another version, or a Pro/Air. So that sort of adds to my dilemma. Should I just wait?

I would like to use the moodbook to give presentations during which I would like to write and scribble a lot on the slides.

Does anyone know about a plugin or additional software or any other solution to achieve the following:

1. Switch quickly between "writing" and "pointing" mode, and switch quickly between different colors.
(PPT does offer a pen during presentation mode, but switching between pen and arrow is way too clumsy and time-consuming.)

2. Retains what I have written on the slides during presentation. It's not necessary to save everything when I quit PPT.
(PPT right now erases everything when I switch to the next slide and then back again.)

3. Provides a quick way to insert a new, empty slide after the one that is currently being presented (so that I can scribble on it) without leaving presentation mode.

Any ideas and pointers will be highly appreciated.

So I received my modbook late holding up my project.

Then I got my modbook and was impressed.

Then the logic board went out so I sent it in for repairs.

I got back my modbook with a working logic board but during the repair they had loosened the wireless antenna so it now works only rarely and with the strongest of signals.

The hassle and cost of sending it in has been enough to keep me from wanting to send it in again except that while leaving the computer in sleep mode it has reached a dangerous level of hot (contact would burn skin). So I am not sure if it is the fan or what.

At this point it is past when I can just return it for part of the money but that is what I would like to do. The idea is amazing and I like Axiotrons solution except that I have not received a functional model. And getting it repaired has had a few too many headaches.
email me if anyone has questions.

I remember in 2001, the first time i saw a Mac was when my neighbor was using his 366mhz ibook clamshell in his backyard and i was watching him use it, it looked soo awesome and back then i was 4 or 5. Ever since then i've wanted a mac but my parents said "no", the next year i asked if i got straight "A"s for the next three years if they would get me one and they said "sure", 3 years later they decided to say no even though i had kept my promise, so then in 2004 i decided to try to save up some money and then one day i saw, something about a pet center, that sheltered lost pets and it was gonna close down unless they had enough money, so i gave up my $900. then in 2006 still getting straight "A" and pennyless and still in need of a mac. I decided to sell my paintings and it worked, each one sold for $3 each. They were amazing and each one had a message on the back that said, "this is for you". I loved doing it and i earned 1,200 enough for a macbook(2007), but then my family got short on cash and i decided that the mac would have to wait a little longer. I then saw an ad in a macworld magazine about the MODBOOK, I loved it, my saving once again had to go for school supplies. Could some please give me some advice how to get modbook without feeling guilty for funds or having to spend on other stuff, but educational stuff can't be excluded. Or some could give me a modbook, nobody has to give me one, but it would be a wonderful gift since my bar mitzvah is coming up soon and it would be the best gift ever, plus it would allow me to type my essays at home instead of at the library and this post was typed at the library, please help me thanks. -anonymous

Sometimes QuickClicks won't show the keyboard in response to the button on the stylus.

When this happens you can usually work around it by using the icon in the menu bar, except the status will be out of sync. For example, the option labeled "Hide Keyboard" will actually show it.

It would be nice to hear that this is known and being worked on.

Thanks!

I begin to see color-shifting and brightness fall-off at either the top or bottom of the display with a very small amount of tilt. At not more than 30 degrees, most of the screen is inverse or otherwise unreadable.
Just wondering if this affects other people's ModBook's, or if I have a unique problem. A quick search for "viewing angle" only turned up a couple unrelated threads.

On the other hand, the horizontal viewing angle is quite wide. If the screen could be put into portrait mode (*crowd grumbles*) it would solve a lot of the problem.
